Day 4 - SPAIN - ROAD TO SANTIAGO

SPAIN       ( add your email address in the field below to follow along automatically)

Day 4 -
From:  Villa de Garcia  ( GALACIA) (@2000 people)
To:      Villafranca de Bierzo ( CATELLEON/LEON)
Distance: @ 200 KM

We left the province of Galacia and drove through he province of Castilla & Leon at the foot of the Picos of Europe mountain range. (The Spanish Alps). It was drizzling rain most of the day. Still the scenery was spectacular.

Villafranca de  Bierzo location is special because it's directly located on the "Road to Santiago". This Camino has been famous since the 11th century for Pilgrams to cross on foot from Samson France to Santiago de Compestela.  Amazingly enough this town of only 2000 people has over 8 massive Churches... Cathedrals...

We must have seen over 500 pilgrims walking along the various trails - back packs, rain gear on, hiking, alone or in groups. Read up on it. People from as far as Japan come to see it and take part of the walk! There is nothing touristy about it....
